Born in Willesden, London; Valerie studied Performing Arts at the Bellville Drama Institute. Valerie formed a musical partnership with her sister-in-law Elaine and performed as ‘The Avon Sisters’ at the BBC Radio Exhibition at Earls Court. The performance was seen by Norrie Paramor and they were signed to Columbia Records.
The addition of Ray Adams meant a name change and so they became ‘The Avons’ and soon experienced chart success with ‘Seven Little Girls (Sitting In The Back Seat)’ which reached number 3 in the charts.
Following several other chart hits as ‘The Avons’ Valerie began to concentrate on song writing and has many chart hits to her name including a number 1 single performed by The Shadows. Valerie’s talent as a songwriter brought her much success and culminated with three of her songs being put forward for the Eurovision Song Contest. After two previous attempts with Mary Hopkin and Clodagh Rogers, the song ‘Long Live Love’ was chosen by public vote and then performed by Olivia Newton John to come a creditable fourth. The song has since gone on to be recorded by over 50 artistes’ world wide. Valerie received much deserved recognition for her work with an Ivor Novello Award for “An Outstanding Contribution To The British Music Industry”.
Valerie has also made TV appearances in many variety sketch shows performed on prime time BBC and ITV; she is an accomplished vocal coach and comedic actress with a huge experience and variety of performance under her belt. Valerie left the profession for a while to look after her late husband and now after a period of retraining is looking to return to the business with roles in TV, commercials and videos. |
